Makeup Revolution Lipstick Review

Hello everyone!

My advent calendar for December 2016 was from Makeup Revolution, and in that advent calendar I got six lipsticks. I thought I'd swatch and review them here for those of you who were thinking of picking a couple up. Unfortunately, none of them are named/numbered, so I can't give you an exact shade.

One or two of the shades in this calendar were very similar, and those are the two brown/nude shades. I don't really wear these kinds of shades all that much anyway, but I was disappointed that there wasn't more variety at this end of the spectrum. However, the second one pictured is definitely lighter in colour to the first one.

Neither of these shades compliment my skin tone. I think I need something a bit darker to make a feature of my lips, rather than going for a pale nude/brown. I also had to try a few times to get a good colour payoff from these two, perhaps because they were so similar to my actual skin colour - they just didn't want to show up to begin with.

The third one is a Barbie pink. Again, this isn't really my shade, it's a bit bright, but I think the colour payoff and pigmentation from this and the darker shades is very good. They apply nicely as well - not uneven and patchy.

As is often the trouble with dark lipstick shades, they sometimes come off in the middle of your lip, leaving an awkward ring around your lips of product that managed to withstand a glass of water. These are no different, and I have to reapply quite often. This shade of red is a bright, true red, which is a lovely colour, and the one underneath is blood red and dark, which is always nice in winter.

All of these are matte lipsticks, which means that they are quite drying. If I don't apply Vaseline first, they get really quite uncomfortable. I can't stand dry lips, and it looks awful with lipstick on when you can see dry skin and chapped lips.

This purple isn't a shade I'd normally go for, but I really love it. I think it's a special, flattering shade. These lipsticks are good against even waterproof makeup remover, so if you don't eat or drink or just reapply afterwards, they actually last quite a long time. This is great if you don't particularly enjoy having to reapply lipstick that rubbed off in seconds.

I've included a picture of the swatches I did to show you the colours on my skin. The numbers correspond to the order the lipsticks appear in this post. I was impressed by the pigmentation of most of them, but found they took a long time to dry so ended up smudging on my hand quite quickly.

So there you have it, my review of the Makeup Revolution lipsticks that came in their advent calendars. They certainly aren't the best lipsticks money can buy but for their price point they are actually quite good and they come in a large range of shades.

Thank you for reading, lots of love

  1. I would love to try #5. I'm sorry that these didn't work out for you. We have Makeup Revolution now in the US (only in Ulta) and all of their lip products have such mediocre reviews.
